Coffee Drink Styles

 

Below is a list of the most popular coffee beverages:

 

  • Espresso - or caffè espresso is a concentrated coffee beverage brewed by forcing very hot water under high pressure through coffee that has been ground to a fine consistency. It is made at 8.2-18 atm or 120-265 PSI) of pressure. The serving size is usually measured in shots of between 25 and 30 ml (around 1 fluid ounce) in size.



  • Affogato - is topping a drink or dessert (e.g. gelato pr ice cream) with espresso.
  • Black eye - A cup of drip coffee with two shots of espresso in it.
  • Ca phe sua da - or cafe sua da (Vietnamese) is an "iced milk coffee" using about a quarter to a half as much sweetened condensed milk to dark coffee and then pouring it over ice.

  • Café Américano - or Americano or Long Black, is a style of coffee prepared by adding espresso to hot water, giving a similar strength but different flavor from regular. The espresso is always added to the hot water to preserve the crema.
  • Café Doppio — double espresso
  • Café corretto - or carajillo , is a shot of espresso with a shot of liquor, usually grappa, brandy or sambuca.
  • Café Freddo — iced coffee
  • Caffe Hag — decaffeinated coffee
  • Café Au Lait - or "caffè latte", "café con leche" kawa biała", café com leite" or "coffee with milk". In Europe, café au lait is the name most often used in coffee shops.
  • Café Latte - or flat white, is a coffee prepared generally made with an ⅓ espresso and ⅔ steamed milk. Australian lattes and flat whites are usually served in 215-240ml cups, making them stronger than lattes in some other countries.
  • Café Macchiato - (or Espresso macchiato) is an espresso with a teaspoon of milk in it and a small "spot" of foam on top of the crema.
  • Café Mocha - is a similar to a cafe latte but with a portion of dark/milk chocolate syrup or powder. White chocolate would produce a white mocha. Mocha is also a type of 'chocolatey' coffee bean (from Mocha in Yemen).
  • Cappuccino - is made with an espresso base coffee (usually dark roast) one third coffee, one third hot milk and one third milk foam. Cappuccino variations of the mixtures are usually called cappuccino chiaro (light cappuccino, or wet cappuccino) with more milk than normal, and cappuccino scuro (dark cappuccino or dry cappuccino) with less milk than normal.
  • Cortado - (or cortadito, or tallat) is an espresso with a small amount of warm milk. The ratio of milk to coffe is between 1:1 - 1:2. Variations include Cortado condensada (espresso and condensed milk) and leche y leche (with condensed milk and cream on top).

  • Flat White - (Australian), or Caffe Latte, is a coffee prepared generally made with an ⅓ espresso and ⅔ steamed milk. Australian lattes and flat whites are usually served in 215-240ml cups, making them stronger than lattes in some other countries.
  • Granita Di Caffe Con Panna — frozen, iced beverage (similar to a slush, but ice shavings make it authentic) and topped with whipped cream
  • Irish Coffee - is a cocktail consisting of hot coffee, Irish whiskey, and sugar, stirred, then with thick cream floated on top.
  • Latte Macchiato - is steamed milk served in a glass with ½ shot of espresso or less poured through it, leaving a 'spot' of crema.
  • Long Black - or Americano, is a style of coffee prepared by adding espresso to hot water, giving a similar strength but different flavor from regular. The espresso is always added to the hot water to preserve the crema.
  • Lungo - (Italian "long") More water is let through the ground coffee, giving a weaker taste (size about 40 ml), also known in France as an "allongé".
  • Red eye - A cup of drip coffee with one shot of espresso in it.
  • Short Black - is made with only a single shot of espresso.
